"tramp art" American jewelry box. Tramp art is a folk art style popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, in which wood is carved into decorative, layered patterns with a serrated edge.
The box has a richly detailed pattern of geometric shapes, including a star or flower-like motif in the center of the front. The entire exterior is covered with small, triangular carvings, which give a relief-like effect. The lid has a similarly decorative finish, and there are metal catches on the front. Inside there are two compartments. Age: ca. 1870-1940.
